Psychedelic Integration

With the increase in mainstream recognition of research into the use of psychedelic substances to treat a variety of mental health concerns, people have been taking it upon themselves to seek out and take these substances in an unregulated setting. Others might choose to take these substances for recreational, or spiritual purposes. The use of these substances in an unregulated setting poses the risk of increased mental distress associated with difficult experiences, inexperienced/uninformed or even abusive facilitators, unexpected doses, contents and more.

Integration is the process of sitting with and processing a psychedelic experience with the goal of integrating aspects of it into one's everyday life. This can include finding meaning in seemingly nonsensical insights/experiences, or processing trauma associated with an experience. Integration is not limited to the use psychedelic substances but can also include experiences with other non ordinary states of consciousness or retreats, such as medication, yoga, and holotropic breathwork.

Integration also isn't limited to difficult or unregulated experiences, and can be used to support continued reflection and healing among those who had an enjoyable or insightful experience, including those that occurred within regulated therapeutic settings. There is no one way to integrate an experience, and it can take months, years, or even a lifetime to process.
